NI is a 19-month-old female brought into the emergency department by her mother because of increasing shortness of breath and frequent cough. Assessment upon arrival reveals a heart rate of 132, respiratory rate of 42, and temperature of 103.1o F. SpO2 is 93% on room air. She has respiratory distress with nasal flaring and intercostal and substernal retractions. Auscultation reveals stridor on inspiration. She also has an occasional ‘bark-like’ cough. The mother states that NI has had what appeared to be an upper respiratory tract infection for the past two days.
